The Midnight Butter Index: Measuring the Real-World Value of $NIGHT
Cryptocurrency prices can feel abstract. Token values rise and fall quickly, and it can be difficult to understand what those changes mean in everyday life. The Midnight Butter Index was created to solve that problem by comparing the value of the $NIGHT token to something familiar that people buy regularly: butter.
The Midnight Butter Index shows how many $NIGHT tokens are required to buy one pound of U.S. Grade AA butter, which is a high quality standard for butter in the United States. By translating the price of a digital asset into the cost of a common grocery item, the index gives a simple way to understand the real purchasing power of $NIGHT.
To calculate the index, two pieces of data are combined.
The first is the weekly U.S. butter price published by CLAL.it. CLAL.it is a dairy market research service that tracks global dairy commodity prices. These prices represent the wholesale market, which means the price businesses pay when buying butter in large quantities. Consumers usually pay more in grocery stores, so the wholesale price is multiplied by 2.5 to estimate an average retail price, which is the price shoppers typically see in stores.
The second piece of data is the daily market price of $NIGHT, taken from CoinMarketCap, a widely used platform that tracks cryptocurrency prices across exchanges.
Once these two numbers are available, the calculation is simple. The estimated retail price of one pound of butter is divided by the current price of $NIGHT. The result tells us how many $NIGHT tokens would be needed to purchase that butter.
For example, if butter costs five dollars per pound and one $NIGHT token is worth one dollar, the index would show that five $NIGHT tokens are needed to buy a pound of butter.
This index moves as markets change. If the price of butter rises, the index increases because more $NIGHT is required to buy the same item. If the price of $NIGHT rises, the index falls because fewer tokens are needed.
The result is a simple and relatable indicator of value. Instead of thinking only in terms of token prices, the Midnight Butter Index helps people understand the purchasing power of $NIGHT in everyday terms. As new butter price data and $NIGHT market prices become available, the chart updates automatically, providing a continuously refreshed view of how digital value connects to the real world.
