The Midnight Foundation has released something a little different: a documentary series. On October 22, 2026, all four episodes of Freedom Fighters, featuring Venezuelan democracy leader Leopoldo López, became available to watch at midnight.network/freedomfighters.
Who Is Leopoldo López?
López is a Venezuelan opposition leader and campaigner. According to the Foundation, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison, including time in solitary confinement, for mobilizing citizens. The series follows his journey from street protests in Venezuela to international advocacy for democracy.
The Four Episodes
Losing Democracy: How the Venezuelan government dismantled checks and balances and took control of independent media.
Fighting Autocracy: How nonviolent movements can mobilize citizens to expose corruption and repression. Autocracy is a system where one person or small group holds nearly unlimited power.
Winning the Day: How López kept his sense of agency during years in solitary confinement, and how that idea connects to digital identity and communication tools.
Hacking the System: How, in exile in Madrid, López worked with other pro democracy leaders facing financial censorship (being cut off from banking or payments) and surveillance, and explored tools like open source blockchain to move resources without exposing identity.
Why a Blockchain Foundation Made a Documentary
The series ties directly to Midnight's mission. As the Foundation argued in its recent post on the digital infrastructure of freedom, privacy is essential for communicating, transacting and organizing safely. For activists, journalists and ordinary people living under surveillance, that privacy can be the difference between speaking up and staying silent.
Midnight's approach, private by default with selective disclosure when needed, is designed for exactly these situations. Freedom Fighters puts a human face on why that technology matters.
