If you build on Midnight, today is an important day. The Midnight Foundation's hosted indexer and RPC endpoints for both mainnet and Preprod are being permanently shut down on October 9, 2026. Developers need to switch to Blockfrost endpoints or run their own infrastructure.

What Are These Services?

  • RPC endpoint: Short for remote procedure call. It is the address an app uses to talk to the blockchain, sending transactions and asking questions like "what is this balance?"

  • Indexer: A service that organizes raw blockchain data into a searchable format, so apps can load information quickly instead of digging through every block.

  • Blockfrost: A popular infrastructure provider in the Cardano ecosystem that offers ready to use endpoints, so developers do not have to run their own servers.

What Developers Need to Do

  • Point apps to Blockfrost endpoints, or run an indexer of your own.

  • Note that local wallet data cannot be carried over. Apps must delete old wallet files and resync from the genesis block, meaning they rebuild their view of the chain starting from the very first block.

Why Make This Change?

Early networks often rely on a foundation to run core services. As an ecosystem matures, those services move to independent providers and to the community. That spreads responsibility across more parties and reduces reliance on any single operator, a key part of decentralization.

For regular NIGHT holders, nothing changes. For builders, a quick configuration update keeps everything running smoothly.
